New Tree Planting Requirements for the Right-of-Way

For the protection and benefit of the public, the City’s residents through their elected leadership have chosen to establish rules regulating the responsible planting and care of trees in the public road and utility right-of-ways.

If you are interested in planting a tree in the Right-of-Way (typically the section between the curb and sidewalk) you will need to fill out a Tree Planting Application.  The application is used to determine the tree is planted safely away from above and below ground utilities, driveways, fire hydrants, street signs, street lighting, and clear of obstructing site distance.  The owner will need to sign an acknowledgement that they are responsible for maintaining the tree (including removal when necessary) and responsibility for any damage to sidewalks or utilities.

For more information about the new policy please contact City Hall at 517-369-7334 or at the City offices (Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm).  The application along with planting rules is available in the document at the bottom of this page:
